I graduated from the University of Alabama in Birmingham in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I began teaching at Odenville Elementary School in 1997. In 2001, I earned a master's degree from UAB in Collaborative Education. I have been teaching in the area of special education for sixteen years. I began teaching at Odenville Intermediate School when it was founded in 2007. The 2015-2016 school year will be my nineteenth year to teach in Odenville.
As I worked with students who had difficulty in reading, my interest grew in the area of dyslexia. I wanted to have the knowledge and expertise to help these bright, wonderful students who inexplicably struggle to learn to read. In 2012, I was given the opportunity to join a cohort of teachers to receive special training in the area of dyslexia. I completed this training in 2014. I am now a certified academic language therapist and a member of the Academic Language Therapy Association.
I have been married to my husband, Dennis, for 22 years. We have two children, Josh and Jordan. Josh is a college student majoring in biomedical technology, and Jordan is a senior at St. Clair County High School. We also have three spoiled dogs: Teddy, Princess, and Bo. When I am not at school, I enjoy watching SCCHS football games, fishing, and reading. I love reading, and I want my students to find the joy of becoming lost in a great story!
C.S. Lewis is one of my favorite authors. When I was a young girl, I spent a lot of time in Narnia with Aslan and the Pevensie children. One of my favorite quotes by Lewis is, “There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind.”
